WG 3.7 Smart sensors, actuators and communication

Focus

The "Smart process measuring and control technology" working group addresses issues including the following topics in the context of its experience exchange, its concept developments, formulation of requirements to be met by automation solutions and its involvement in national and international standardization:

  • Development of requirements and a topology for smart field devices, which allows the interaction with data and model-based control strategies up to soft sensors
  • Promoting the digitization in the process industry by bidirectional data connection of sensors and actuators
  • Derivation of a smart and secure communication architecture to come to a failure-free communication of all field devices on the basis of a single protocol, which is understood by all field devices and control systems
  • Development of a vision for future applications (use cases) and the derivation of the resulting business models (business cases)
  • Promotion and participation of open standards
  • Identification of possible paths in the digitization of the field device technology
  • Recommendation of change processes in the process industry
  • Promotion of cooperation through regular exchange of experience and conversations for the development of systems and their use between users, device manufacturers, and research institutes

Advantages

  • Definition of an appropriate and uniform topology for smart field devices
  • Building the link between the field device level and process control technology
  • Creation of a link between automation technology and information and communication technology (ICT)
  • Sorting the communication standards for future applications
  • Consulting expertise for companies in the process industry
  • Creation of training concepts for the development of new qualifications
