WG 3.1 General Sensor Technology

Focus & Advantages

The NAMUR working group focuses on the standardization and quality assurance of field devices in the process industry. The documents reflect a systematic approach to harmonizing technical specifications in order to improve the interoperability, maintenance, and safety of automation components. The primary emphasis is on developing practice-oriented recommendations that benefit both manufacturers and users, while increasing efficiency in planning, procurement, and operations.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Measurement Accuracy and Error Representation
    Uniform specification of measurement deviations and their documentation for better comparability
  • Signal Standardization
    Harmonization of output signals, particularly for fault information (e.g., 4–20 mA standards)
  • Software and Hardware Management
    Structured version labeling and change tracking for digital field devices
  • Standard Device Parameters
    Definition of uniform device parameters with default values for faster commissioning
  • Safety Requirements
    Integration of safety functions and diagnostic capabilities into standard devices for process safety instrumented systems (PLT safety devices)
