WG 1.11 Reference Models in Control Technology


The "Reference Models in Control Technology" working group addresses issues including the following topics in the context of its experience exchange, its concept developments, formulation of requirements to be met by automation solutions and its involvement in national and international standardisation:

  • Continual development and updating of the proven reference models of control technology
  • Identification of candidates for new reference models
  • Definition of a consistent reference model landscape
  • Description of the consequences that result from changes made to models and processes of engineering activities during planning, maintenance or application
  • Observation of activities in research, industry, technical committees and standardisation organisations, and in this case especially "Industry 4.0"


  • The definition of reference models allows the insertion of the perspective of automation engineers in companies by means of software. The uniform definition of reference models enables a simple interaction between manufacturer and user. Moreover, the user does not need to accept a manufacturer-designed model structure, since he or she can contribute his or her own ideas
  • In the area of modelling and simulation technology, which covers the formal description of systems and processes, the methodological basis has been developed significantly leading to an established structure. As a result, a broad application in operational practice is already within reach
  • The growing importance of additional functions like Plant Asset Management, Performance Monitoring or Supply Chain Management leads to new challenges for structures and concepts of automation technology
  • The development of requirements, methods and solutions calls for new HMI concepts on the basis of new interaction models designed by the operator, planner or maintenance personnel
