Abstract to NA 053 “Software- and Hardware Identification of Field Devices and Signal Processing Devices”

Driven by the rapid innovation of device technologies this NAMUR-recommendation shall support and help end-users to detect changes, to draw conclusions and to react. The document deals both with compatibility of application, handling of devices and related documentation and refers to software and hardware as well. Furthermore, it shall instruct manufacturers about those changes end-users need to know and the way how to indicate these changes.

The aim of the NAMUR Recommendation NE053:

• The change notifications are intended to support the decision as to whether a device should be subjected to a retest in order to maintain operational reliability or fulfilment of the safety-related requirements.
• Maintenance and servicing personnel should be able to recognise immediately on the device which components are compatible with each other or whether further measures are required.
• Enable clear identification of devices (software, firmware, communication and configuration software, etc.)

Manufacturers will be advised how to label their devices in order to support end-users to easily identify these devices later.
