The NAMUR Recommendation NE 170 has been released and may now be obtained from the NAMUR Office.

Abstract to NE 170 "NAMUR Thermowell – Design and Calculation"

The target of the above-mentioned document is, to describe and assay the different configuration methods for thermowells. In this the differences of the two standards DIN 43772 an ASME PTC 19.3 are compared to each other, based on all factors of influence. However, it will highlight the limitations of its scope of application and explain why thermowells designed according to either standard differ considerably, especially at higher face flow velocities. In our view, ASME PTC 19.3 is a useful complement to DIN 43772, at least when it comes to designing applications with higher face flow velocities. In addition, it offers an assessment of the step response time for each thermowell design.

Based on both standards and the experience the development of a NAMUR thermowell will be done. In this case we tried to ensure a maximum fulfillment of the requirements which are requested by the ASME PTC 19.3 and to implement the benefit of a short step response time into the design.

The requirements of a low thermal conduction to the connection head and the easiness while doing the installation and maintenance procedures has been considered.
