Abstract NE 161 "Remote Operation Basics"
(Edition: 2016-09-27)

Remote Operation concepts reveal a new way to face challenges such as the need for an increased productivity in all regions, flexibility of production and business processes, adoption to demographic changes and expert availability, especially in emerging markets.

There are three core intentions of this recommendation: First, it aims at describing and defining the role of Remote Operation for the process industry. Second, the recommendation describes both the challenges and potential obstacles on the way to remote operation as well as resulting benefits. The third aspect is that the paper shall reflect a company-independent view of the process industry on the topic of Remote Operation and as such can serve as a basis for discussion.

In view of the existing examples of unmanned facilities such as off-shore platforms or plants like waste-water treatments with operation without night shift, it can be clearly stated that Remote Operation is an achievable and attractive objective for many facilities which is supported and enabled by advancing technology.
